The Drumlin Community Farm Producer’s Cooperative is a multi-cultural group of families and individuals growing organic produce on land just South of Madison, WI. Our diverse members are residents of Madison who are committed to producing fresh, healthy, chemical-free food to feed our communities. We aim to get healthy and affordable food to consumers who traditionally lack access to it, in a way that increases community food security and self-determination. The cooperative provides jobs and training in sustainable agriculture, with a focus on youth and low-income families. We also partner with other organizations who have similar goals.
Our farm is located 3 miles South of Madison in Fitchburg, between Lalor Rd. and Hwy MM, which runs along Hwy 14 south of Madison, at the corner of Murphy Road, just South of Irish Lane. Here we grow 6 acres of a variety of popular organic vegetables that Wisconsin eaters love, as well as some cultural foods popular to African-American, Mexican, and African communities. We grow many heirloom varieties of vegetables and save many of our own seeds, including heirloom corn and beans. We use our heirloom corn to prepare healthy traditional food such as hand-made tortillas and tamales traditional to Mexico, and West-African and African-American specialty foods. We also operate a licensed processing kitchen, making local salsas, pasta sauces, and other value-added products. A little of everything that we produce will be a part of what we offer to our CSA members.
In addition to a cooperatively run organic farm, our group also works with youth, teaching sustainable agriculture, urban gardens, providing meaningful work and mentoring. Starting in 2009, co-op member Michael Goldsby initiated the Avalon Demonstration Project, a garden and market focused along low-income housing apartments known as the Avalon Village, next to the Allied Drive neighborhood. Drumlin Farm Cooperative collaborates with this project and works with Youth Services of Dane County, to provide these opportunities to young people.
