More CSA farms join the Coalition

The CSA Coalition is excited to welcome five new farms for 2012, including possibly the oldest CSA farm in the state, a new organic egg CSA, and several highly experienced fruit and vegetable growers. The diversity of our membership is what makes the CSA Coalition what it is, and we’re looking forward to help you connect you with some great farmers.

Equinox Community Farm in Waunakee started on less than one acre just a couple years ago, but John Binkley has expanded his successful operation to over 8 acres, and has been doing the good work of transitioning lots of new land into organic management while he’s at it.

Prairie Bluff Farm is perhaps best known for its eggs, sold under the Pasture Patterns label at grocery stores and restaurants throughout the area. They raise cattle for sale by the cut, package, or quarter and offer an egg CSA thanks to over 1000 certified organic birds raised on lush pasture. They offer a video on their website demonstrating their pastured poultry techniques and an overview of all the different sorts of places they deliver.

Primrose Valley Farm – not to be confused with Primrose Community Farm, another Coalition farm! – is run by Jamie & David Baker, who progressed from a strong background in business management near Chicago to organic vegetable farming in southwestern Wisconsin. David also consults at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he works with CIAS and the UW Dept. of Agricultural Economics to develop database- and web-based applications to improve profitability on small vegetable farms.

Sunny Cone Farm is a small farm in Marshall, just northeast of Madison. The family runs the whole farm themselves, serving several households in the area.

Wellspring has operated a CSA farm for over 20 years, serving both Madison and Milwaukee with one of the longest-running CSAs in the state. Their CSA is part of a broader non-profit education and retreat center whose mission is to inspire and teach people to grow, prepare and eat healthy foo
