Field Day: Tomato Techniques, Aug. 31

Field Day: Tomato Techniques, Aug. 31

What: FairShare Field Day farm tour and discussion on how environmental stresses may change tomato production techniques.

When: Thursday, Aug. 31 2017, 4-6 p.m.

Where: Crossroads Community Farm, 4144 County Hwy J, Cross Plains, WI

Greater disease pressure, multiple environmental stresses, and opportunities for reduced tillage are leading organic growers to rethink tomato production techniques. This field day will include a full farm tour with a focus on tomatoes. Tour highlights include:

  • SARE research trial comparing green plastic, black landscape fabric, and marsh hay mulch used in no-till tomatoes to a tilled and plastic-mulched control (yield data provided)
  • Use of annual rye and Dutch white clover between tomato beds
  • Spray equipment
  • Fields beyond the tomatoes!

Discussion will focus on tomato row spacing, succession planting, irrigation scheduling, spray options, reduced tillage options, hoophouse issues, varieties for specific markets (CSA, farmers market, wholesale, processing),  and will roam into other crops as well.

Crossroads Community Farm is run by Mike and Cassie Noltnerwyss.  They grow diversified organic vegetables on 22 acres for direct and wholesale markets, including over 400 CSA boxes per week.

This field day is free.  Please RSVP by Aug. 30 so that we can make enough handouts.
