In 2001, Claire Strader cleared 200 honeysuckle bushes and mulberry trees making way for a few tomatoes, winter squashes, and potatoes. The following year Troy Community Farm began. Their CSA membership grew as ravenously as their original honeysuckle bushes, increasing from 14 members to 160 shares in eight years. The five-acre farm has been certified organic from the start and keeps “CSA” at the core of Troy. The farm is part of a 26-acre site on the north side of Madison overseen by…
Value Added, For Everyone by Michael Fields Agriculture Institute Policy staff American farmers have always been among the nation’s innovators, and USDA began offering Value-Added Producer Grants (VAPG) about ten years ago to help them keep innovating. You may not know it yet, but value-added grants also make possible a lot of the things you love about your local farm: season extension, new products like ciders and preserves, the diversity of fruits, vegetables and sometimes even livestock. It also happens that this grant program is a huge boost for rural economies in tough times, helping farmers expand their businesses, boost…
It’s the Year of CSA! Wisconsin is at the forefront of Organic Agriculture and a pioneer in the national CSA movement. 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the CSA Open House, a cornerstone event that brings together farmers and community members to share information, make lasting connections, and encourage direct purchase of fresh food from local farms.  To mark this historic milestone, the Madison Area CSA Coalition, in partnership with CSA farmers, restaurants, university and organizational allies throughout the state, is sponsoring a year of special events.  Join us as we continue to build this thriving movement and position our community for the next 20…

Well, it’s true that last autumn, as part of the now-defunct Supercommittee process, Congress nearly passed…
By Katy Wallace Katy Wallace is a traditional Naturopath, and Yoga Teacher with Human Nature (www.humannaturellc.com).  She enjoys eating fresh local foods and exploring seasonal changes of southern Wisconsin ecology with her husband, Woody, and daughter, Marian.   The cold, silent winter months bring the opportunity for self-centering. Time taken for self-reflection heightens our internal capacity for storage; restoring the nervous system from the hectic events of fall and holidays, and also making space for new schemes in the New Year.  Similarly, winter is a time to make space for a vegetable storage share, and reap the restorative qualities of…

Wisconsin Knows Organic! The UW-Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems (CIAS) and DATCP recently published a fascinating look  at where Wisconsin stands in the national organic spotlight, and it turns out we are doing a stellar job. Wisconsin is home to over 1,200 organic farms, the 2nd-highest number in the country (California is 1st), and has more organic livestock farms than any other state. Organic product sales total over $132 million and all of these farms represent thousands of jobs. Find out more by reading Organic Agriculture in Wisconsin: 2012 Status Report
