Fall on the Farm The 2015 growing season is coming to a close. So what's happening on local farms? We asked farmer Heidi Accola of Roots & Shoots, LLC to tell us. She writes: Winter is coming. If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, that has an ominous sound to it. But if you’re a Wisconsin vegetable farmer, it’s one of the most beautiful sentences to be heard! Fall on the farm is a mix of preparation and what I call “tucking the farm in” for the winter. The…
Thanks for a Great Bike the Barns! It takes a community to produce Bike the Barns: HAM radio operators, bike mechanics, SAG wagon drivers, caterers, sponsors, more than 85 volunteers, our farmers hosting stops along the route, our other farmers who donate produce to feed the riders, musicians, photographers, park staff, etc. etc. etc. -- not to mention the riders who raise pledges for FairShare's programming. We cannot thank you enough, and especially want to thank Monty's Blue Plate Diner, Bassett Street Brunch Club, Tex Tubb's Taco Palace, Just Coffee, Willy Street Co-op, Madison…

Summer on the Farm   This is Heidi Accola from Roots & Shoots, LLC, a 43-share, 1.3-acre certified organic CSA and market farm 45 min NW of Madison. I’ve been asked to describe summer on our farm. Since I have removed the word “busy” as an adjective for my life, I will say that our summers are full of work opportunities. The farmer’s market begins in May and we attend every Saturday. The flock of 200 chickens is at egg-laying capacity. The skincare products need restocking. The maple syrup and canned treats need labeling. The meat chicks must be ordered so that we have…
Wise Farmers Value Soil; Our State Leaders Should, Too Please raise your hand if you knew that in addition to a State Bird (Robin) and State Flower (Wood Violet), Wisconsin has a State Soil. It is Antigo Silt Loam, and its existence among our legally designated state symbols reflects soil’s high importance to Wisconsin’s agricultural prosperity and the state’s historic role as the birthplace of federal soil conservation programming. Back in 1933, Coon Valley, Wisconsin was chosen by the newly created Soil Erosion Service as the first watershed in the nation in which to demonstrate soil…
