Farmers are stoking up their greenhouses, seeding onions, planting greens in hoop houses! It’s very early spring, and thus, it’s CSA sign-up season. This is the time to dream of the freshest, most delicious veggies, while outside, it’s gray-gray-gray, and nothing but a few crocuses ‘sing spring.’
The main CSA season in Southern WI runs from June to October, with many CSA farms selling both spring and fall sharesin addition to their regular season offerings. **Many farms sell out of their regular shares by late May.**
How to choose a farm? Especially if you live in Madison, where more than 35 farms offer pick-up sites? Well, start with a little introspection.
1. How important is convenience? If it’s very important to you, check the interactive Pick-Up Locations Map to see which farms deliver near your home or work, and research those farms. (Click on the dots for pick-up location details.)
2. Do you want veggies AND meat or eggs? Or veggies and maple syrup or honey? Use the CSA Farm Guide chart (pages 8-11) to find out what options are available to you.
3. How important is community? Do you want your farmer to really know you, and vice versa? You might be happier with a smaller, newer farm. Check the acreage and the year established in the farm descriptions in the CSA Farm Guide.
4. Do you want a farm that offers lots of events? Read through the farm descriptions and browse farm websites. (Hint: It might be fastest to ask the farmer directly via email about their 2016 events.) Be sure to ask if there is a charge for u-picks.
