We are happy to welcome Jenna for the Spring 2017 semester! As the Community programs Intern, she will be processing applications and conducting community outreach in order to promote and expand the Partner Shares program. Jenna is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she is studying professional writing and communication. A self-proclaimed localvore, Jenna grew up on her Grandparents’ farm in Cottage Grove, WI, where her passion for local agriculture (and dogs) first began.
We are happy to welcome Maggie as our Farmer Program intern for 2016. She will be working with Claire Strader on two on-farm research projects funded by North Central SARE. The first is on living aisles under organic vegetables and the second is on no-till organic tomatoes. Maggie recently graduated from Beloit College and has jumped right into the field season with these projects on five FairShare farms. Maggie brings previous research experience and a great attitude to the work, even in the rain!
Paige is recent graduate of UW-Madison, double majoring in Agronomy and Rural Sociology, and will be continuing her education this fall in a Master’s program for Sociology. Paige’s interest in clean and fair food is what initially drew her to FairShare, which serves as an outlet for her love of all things food. Holding true to the belief that “Eating is an agricultural act”, Paige is thrilled to be working for an amazing organization that emphasizes this truth.
Raina is a senior at Carleton College where she is majoring in American Studies. Her focus is sensory involvement in food, the cultural context of recipes, and the use of the printed word to link memory, experience, and nostalgia with exceptional ingredients. Raina loves reading food writing and cooking her favorite foods. She also works with Local Thyme, creating and promoting seasonal recipes for goodies from CSA boxes.
Danielle is an Environmental Studies student at the University of Vermont in Burlington. She was drawn to Madison for its strong and renowned local food system, and to FairShare CSA Coalition for their key role in the food revolution. Danielle’s focus within the food system is on fresh & fair food accessibility and advocating for food growing farmers! In the past, she has worked on CSA farms throughout the upper Midwest, and hopes to one day call herself a farmer too. She joins the team at FairShare for Summer 2014 as the Bike the Barns & Administrative Support Intern.
Laura is a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Zoology, and is now hoping to pursue a career in the public health field. Since moving to the city, she has enjoyed exploring and eating her way through the vibrant, fresh local food scene that Madison so proudly offers. Her interest in local agriculture grew this past year as she became more aware of how important the presence of a strong and just local food system is to creating a healthy, resilient community. As a FairShare CSA Coalition intern, Laura is excited to learn more about this movement and to take an active role in bringing healthy food to hungry people.
Nikki moved to Madison last Spring after graduating from New York University, where she studied Environmental Studies, Sociology and Food Studies. Over the past five years, her interest in food has lead her to work on several farms, in a few kitchens and with a handful of food-related student organizations. In addition to working with FairShare this summer, Nikki is excited to be cooking for Family HEART Camp, a week-long camp for Nonviolent Communication training, and to be working at Darn Farm, a developing urban permaculture farm in Madison. When she’s not eating, cooking, or thinking about food, you can find Nikki providing caffeine to the masses at Mother Fools. She joins FairShare this summer as the Outreach and Special Events Intern.
A native to Esofea, Wisc., he grew up surrounded by the beautiful agricultural bounty of Wisconsin’s Driftless region and is graduating in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from UW-Madison. He is passionate about local food economies, sustainable principles and strengthening connections between farmers and community members. He is excited to join our team and will be working closely on projects involving Bike the Barns West 2014. Other interests include working at his family’s farm, caring for honeybees, cooking and enjoying the outdoors.
Growing up in Northeastern Wisconsin Phoebe had early exposure to the farming economy. However, it was only when she moved to Madison that she found her interest in local and organic foods. Her knowledge of the benefits of local food systems satisfied personal interest until she witnessed first hand the effect of large-scale agriculture on the environment, after which she became passionate about advocating for both healthy lifestyle and land use. Phoebe will graduate from UW-Madison in Spring 2014 with bachelor degrees in Human Geography and Russian language.
Clare is a sophomore at UW-Madison who is working toward degrees in English and Environmental Studies. Her interest in community shared agriculture and local food began while growing up in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, where her family cooked lots of tasty meals made from weekly CSA shares. Clare is excited to learn as much as possible about Madison’s local food economy through working with Fairshare CSA Coalition.
Andrea recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders as well as Global Health. She became interested in the local food movement after interning with UW-Madison’s student org Slow Food UW and volunteering at Redamte Coffee House in Madison. She is eager to reach out to the community and get more people involved with community supported agriculture. Other interests include traveling, cooking, knitting, and competing in sprint triathlons.
Katherine is a Geography and Environmental Studies student who is interested the intersection of social justice issues and food. She found her passion for sustainable agriculture through a summer spent WWOOFing, and she continues to enjoy gardening and culinary experimentation. She hopes to help build a more inclusive local food system through her involvement with FairShare.
