Growing resilience with HMoob farmers

The richness of cultural knowledge and experiences of the HMoob community is one of the many reasons Wisconsin is such a vibrant place to live. 

But while many in the HMoob community rely on farming for their livelihood, lack of access to training on production methods and business education can be a real barrier to success. 

Kaying & Richard Lao, HMoob growers in Wausau, started out selling primarily through farmers markets. But farmers markets are really labor intensive and take a lot of time compared to other market channels.

“The programs open up our eyes to see there are many ways to sell our products. And if we need help or have questions, we can reach out to those who may have answers. Which is a great opportunity for expanding our knowledge."

Kaying and Richard are now growing specific crops for wholesale, which is much more efficient in terms of scale and labor. And they have a strong network of growers to learn from and connect with as they expand where they are selling their products.
